Young Adults Group – Update
I’m really excited to be a part of starting the ITP Young Adults Group alongside the wonderful Ella and Tom. Ella was the first person I met with ITP, around 5 years after I was diagnosed. It was such a relief to meet someone else with ITP and we both realised how essential it was to be around another person who understands the condition in a way that family and friends can’t. After meeting Tom in London last summer, the three of us have kept in touch and we have benefitted so much from having other young ITP patients to chat to that we want to create this designated space for others.
The aim of the group will be first and foremost to introduce ITP adults to each other, underlining that you are not alone and there are others that can lend a listening ear who truly understand your day-to-day struggles. The group chat will be a safe space for only patients in which people can share or ask questions that they may feel hesitant to discuss in doctor’s offices. These could be around topics such as menstruation, sexual health, mental health etc. We would like to have group calls around four times per year. These calls will be informal and chatty but may surround specific topics as discussed above to give some structure to our meetings and allow patients to think about different aspects of ITP that affect them.
It’s important to highlight that we are not health professionals and this space is not to offer medical advice, but to share our experiences of ITP in the hopes of creating a community for young adults with ITP.
